Everything is Interwoven

In the final chapter of LovingKindess, "Living Our Love," Sharon Salzberg writes beautifully about what ties everything together in her book: Ethical Conduct, sila in Pali. Salzberg writes, "If we want to enjoy happiness, taking the care to be ethical is a cardinal means for that aspiration."
In order to be free we must look at every part of our life because all parts of our lives are interconnected. Salzberg writes about how one cannot have one aspect of ones life filled with lying or deceit and then have another that is peaceful. This is not harmony. Every aspect of our lives are intermeshed.
As Salzberg writes, we can attain wholeness and integrity through the practice of sila. Here are the five basic precepts of conduct which can be your guide for peace and serenity:
1. to refrain from killing or physical violence;
2. to refrain from stealing, or taking that which is not given;
3. to refrain from sexual misconduct, or using our sexual energy in a way that causes harm;
4. to refrain from lying, from harsh speech, from idle speech, and from slander;
5. to refrain from taking intoxicants that cloud the mind and cause heedlessness.
